The World’s Largest Coal Slurry Plant once stood in the place where the proposed Laughlin Solar Tower will become reality. The plant, officially shut down in 2005, was a lost battle with the EPA. The new vision is a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) facility with an iconic architectural tower identifying the location and technology married to the local pride in one’s community.
CSP systems generate solar power by using large, highly reflective parabolic mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto a small area. This is achieved by directing solar radiation to heat a pipe carrying the superheated medium, which is typically salt, to a molten state of over 1000 degrees. This extreme heat reacts with water to create steam, forcing a turbine to generate electricity.
California Edison owns the property and transmission infrastructure (towers, lines, substations, etc) that currently lay dormant. This blank canvas of hundreds of acres with millions of dollars in transmission components intact makes this a very appealing proposition for stakeholders.
